We are pleased to announce the kick-off of the fifth annual CSSE Prevention Solutions Contest. The Prevention Solutions Contest is an opportunity for you to gain profession-wide recognition for you and your company by submitting innovative solutions that you have developed or are using to meet a health and safety challenge in your workplace. Submissions do not need to be complex. In fact, ideas that are simple, practical and effective are generally the most useful for other CSSE members.

Examples of solutions could include:

• specific safety procedures
• innovative control measures
• effective and innovative training programs
• prevention tools
• innovative H&S promotion programs

As in previous years, all submissions will be displayed at the Professional Development Conference in Halifax from September 12 to 15. The deadline for submissions for the contest is August 2, 2010.

All delegates to the conference will be given a ballot that they will use to choose the entry which they feel best resolves the identified health and safety challenge. The following criteria will be used to judge the solutions:

• Presentation – packaging the idea for others to use
• Innovation – unique, cost effective solutions to common issues
• Effectiveness – measurable, outcome-based solutions
• Transferable – adaptable to a variety of workplaces

The ballots will be counted on the final day of the conference and the winners will be announced during the closing ceremonies of the conference. Cash prizes will be awarded to the first, second and third place solutions, as chosen by the conference delegates. The Contest has been sponsored in previous years by the Workplace Safety & Insurance Board of Ontario (WSIB), Worksafe New Brunswick and WorkSafeBC. We are currently working on sponsors for the 2010 contest.

CSSE is in the process of setting up a portion of its website dedicated to the Prevention Solutions submitted in the past four years. Plans are to include the 2010 submissions in this site following the 2010 Conference. This site will be linked to the following website, www.preventionpractices.com, WSIB’s prevention website. So, not only will you receive recognition at the conference, but you will receive recognition from the global network of occupational health, safety and environmental practitioners.

How to submit a Prevention Solution

• Drop a quick email to telling her that you intend to submit an entry at the 2010 Conference in Halilfax. The CSSE office needs to know the number of entries to expect by August 2, 2010.
• A CSSE staff member will set up a meeting with you after August 2nd to discuss how your entry will look, the amount of space that you will need, what resources you will need, when you will be able to provide it to us and how it will be presented at the conference. 
• All entries must then be received in the CSSE office by August 20, 2010. Delivery will be arranged with a CSSE staff member at your August meeting. The preference is to have a digital version of the submission on CD or email attachment (in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
• Participants are responsible for any expenses involved with the displaying of their entry. Those expenses will be identified during your August meeting with a staff member.
• The suggested space for display purposes is 2' x 3'. This will also be discussed during your August meeting with staff.
• CSSE reserves the right to refuse entries that are not complete, that do not meet the visual requirements identified in the August meeting, are not delivered on time or do not meet the objective of the Contest.
• Please note that the contest is not for the promotion of commercial products or services. These types of solutions will not be accepted as part of the Contest.
