Consulting Skills for the OH&S Professional

This two-day course will provide an understanding of, and practice in, the application of professional consulting skills in the context of OH&S practice. This course reviews the functions and roles of a consultant; describes the phases of the consulting process; examines the processes of engagement, contracting and needs assessment; provides a conceptual and practical examination of client-consultant interactions and dynamics; reviews client motives and purposes for retaining consultants; and provides instruction in aspects of project and practice management. The course has a strong practical component.

Who Should Attend

This seminar is highly recommended for both internal and external occupational health and safety consultants. This is a must attend event for anyone considering starting up or wanting to strengthen an OH&S consulting practice. Course participants rate this course very favourably at delivering hands-on tools that are very effective to both types of consultants.

Course Content:

  • Case studies, role playing and interaction with participants
  • Determining what makes an effective consultant
  • Understanding the functions and roles of a consultant
  • The six phases of the consulting process:
    • Initial contact and entry
    • Contract formulation and relationship establishment
    • Problem diagnosis
    • Setting objectives and plans of action
    • Implementation
    • Closure
  • Ethical issues in consulting
  • Contractual aspects of consulting
  • Self, peer and instructor evaluations

The course exam is provided to participants by email within one week of course completion. Participants have 4 weeks from the release date to complete the exam.
