As a Health and Safety Advisor you will join our Guelph or Mississauga, Ontario office as part of our Health & Safety team. The successful applicant will be involved in a broad range of health and safety services with an equal balance of program development work and support for Matrix teams and projects with responsibilities as follows:

 

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Research, write and update H&S policies, programs, and procedures.
  • Collaborate with teams to develop programs (e.g., traffic management, water safety, electrical safety for non-electrical workers, confined space entry) that meet the needs of the organization, our clients and legislation.
  • Apply the principles of change management to effectively communicate and implement the programs.
  • Provide H&S support for Matrix corporate and project teams and committees based in Ontario and Alberta.
  • Influence strong safety practices and culture to generate engagement, and commitment from all employees.
  • Partner with the business, advise and coach leaders and employees to successfully conduct hazard assessment, emergency response planning, inspections, investigations, and root cause analyses.
  • Serve as an internal Certificate of Recognition H&S auditor.
  • Provide subject matter expertise for the development of communications and training. Examples of topics include orientations and onboarding, risk assessment, emergency response and respiratory protection.
  • Facilitate interactive H&S training sessions.
  • Identify trends and issues, strategically engage leaders, and proactively develop solutions.

Education, Experience, Technical Skills: 

  • A minimum 8 years of progressive experience in a health and safety role including field experience.
  • Occupational Health and Safety Certificate/relevant degree required.
  • Canadian Registered Safety Professional designation required.
  • Directly related experience in an environmental consulting organization would be ideal.
  • H&S auditing experience is required. Applying the Infrastructure Health and Safety Association protocol is an asset.
  • Proven experience building collaborative partnerships and effective working relationships with all levels of employees.
  • Ability to influence organizational change.
  • Apply critical thinking to organizational problems involving Health & Safety.
  • Employ proficient technical writing, and apply adept organizational and project management skills.
  • Approximately 20% travel is expected. Most travel will be within the Ontario region. There may be occasional travel (e.g., once per year) to Western Canada.
  • Injury, illness, and WSIB claims management experience would be an asset.
  • Industrial hygiene experience is considered an asset.
