OHSE Student Writing Awards Program
The Board of Directors of the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering (CSSE) is pleased to announce the annual CSSE OHSE Student Writing Awards Program to support excellence in student writing by Canadian students registered in a one, two, or three year OHSE program (full-time or part-time) at an accredited college or university in Canada.
Awards will be distributed as First ($500), Second ($300), and Third ($200) to each identified region (BC, AB, SK, YK) and (MB, ON, NT) and (PQ, NB, PEI, NS, NL, NU). Students receiving a CSSE OHSE Student Writing Award in one year may re-submit in subsequent years. In addition to a CSSE OHSE Student Writing Award, first-place papers will be submitted for possible inclusion in future issues of CSSE’s Contact or the CSSE Canadian Journal of Occupational Health & Safety (CJOHS).
Eligible post-secondary OHSE programs must be a minimum of one year in duration which may be expressed as a total number of class hours per program or approximately 300 plus or minus 10% total class hours per program.
Purpose of the Writing Awards Program
The purpose of the CSSE OHSE Student Writing Awards Program is to stimulate interest among OHSE students in the exposition or argument for or against, or research on, OHSE issues and to recognize outstanding achievement in this endeavour.
The awards program also gives post-secondary students the opportunity to research OHSE issues, develop ideas, or bring proposals for reform to the attention of the safety community. Writing may stem from assignments in an OHSE course or be separate, original, self-generated compositions of interest to the student (3,000 words or less).
How Will the Papers be Chosen?
Selection of writing awards will be overseen by the CSSE Awards Committee - papers will be adjudicated on the basis of originality of proposals for reform in the safety arena and/or issues of interest to the safety community. Clarity of thinking, composition style, and freedom from typographical and grammatical errors will also be factored.
What are the Criteria for Choosing the Papers?
The competition is open to Canadian students registered in a one, two, or three year OHSE program (full-time or part-time) at an accredited university or college in Canada.
Eligible post-secondary OHSE programs must be a minimum of one year in duration which may be expressed as a total number of class hours per program or approximately 300 plus or minus 10% total class hours per program.
Each student is limited to one entry in any given year. Papers may be jointly written. Papers must accompany the official Entry Form for the CSSE OHSE Student Writing Awards Program which must bear the endorsement of an OHSE faculty member of the student's college or university.
Papers must be typed and submitted electronically in PDF format to [email protected] and cannot be longer than 3,000 words (exclusive of footnotes and bibliography).
