Saskatchewan Safety Professional Of The Year

Each year, the Ed Amalo Memorial Award is presented jointly by the Saskatchewan Safety Council and the Northern Light and South Saskatchewan Chapters of the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering.

The award is presented to an individual who has made a significant contribution to the field of safety and injury prevention in the province of Saskatchewan. Congratulations to this year's recipient Patrick Hauser. Patrick has been a long time member of the Northern Light Chapter and is an active member of the Chapter's Executive.

2019 Professional Development Day - Transportation Safety: Keeping Current
 

 

Wayne Summach, prior to his retirement from Cameco in 2018, was the Program Manager, Emergency Preparedness and Security. Wayne managed the transportation emergency response program including the Transport Canada approved emergency response assistance program.  This included front line response to transportation incidents assembling emergency response teams and leading the teams as their incident commander. Wayne’s presentation highlighted his experiences responding to transport emergencies and lessons learned. The writing, development and continual improvement of Cameco’s emergency response assistance plan including the interaction with Transport Canada and learning by experience regulator expectations and avoiding pitfalls. 

Ryan Jacobson - is the Chief Executive Officer of the Saskatchewan Safety Council. His presentation looked at how companies have spent more than 50 years and millions of dollars training their staff to be safer drivers, but vehicle collisions remain a significant risk for many organizations. In this session he examined a common gap in existing corporate driver safety programs, the driver’s behaviour. Traditional corporate driver safety programs address reasoned or planned and habitual behaviour but generally ignore the impulsive, attitudinal behaviours that are typically those that result in excessive risk taking. Recent developments in driver safety training close this gap and offer an opportunity to educate drivers with skills that equip them to better self-regulate risk acceptance and rejection based on rational criteria rather than emotional or impulsive motives.

SGI Carrier Safety Services- Amanda Tafelmeyer Manager, Carrier Safety Services along with SGI Carrier Representatives Jerod Pryputniski  and Ross Alderson provided a presentation on what service areas they are responsible for,  how they monitor vehicles in the province, what is involved in the process of auditing a carrier, and what to expect  during a  CVSA inspection.

Lori Janz a local health and safety management consultant provided a presentation that simplified the complicated hours of service regulations and provided the essentials needed to understand what managers and their drivers are required to do.

2018 Northern Light Chapter Professional Development Day - November 

The 2018 Northern Light Chapter Professional Development Day was held on Thursday November 8, 2018. Our venue once again was the Willows Golf and Country Club in Saskatoon, which provided a beautiful winter setting with exceptional service.  Of our 35 attendees, about one-third were new to our PDD, and they brought refreshing new ideas to go along with the wealth of experience from our loyal returning colleagues.

Our day began with a tasty breakfast while reuniting with old friends and introducing the new ones.  After a warm welcome from our MC, chapter president Adrian Hubbard, we delved straight into our first presentation by Shannon Whyley from the law firm of MLT, discussing the timely topic of Legalization of Marijuana and the Workplace. Shannon’s professional specialties provided this difficult workplace concern with a unique yet practical perspective, which led to lively discussion and lots of idea sharing.

Our second presentation was brought to us by Jason Sadowski, a Health Physicist for Cameco Corporation’s mines and mill division.  His specialty is radon protection in the workplace, and his wealth of knowledge also extends to concerns about radon in homes.  His information on properties, risks, and remediation of radon situations was greatly educational on this very unrecognized danger, and his thorough presentation was appreciated by us all.

We spent some time in a group discussion to share experiences and concerns, sparking conversations that continued throughout the delicious lunch break.  Following that, human resources consultant Darren Lang spent the afternoon teaching us what to look for and strategies for dealing with stress issues in the workplace.  He shared tools for keeping our own stress levels in check, as well as for the workers in our care.  Learning about the external as well as personal situations that can affect our serotonin levels was particularly helpful for analyzing why people respond the way they do, and how to address those responses.

A big “thank you” goes out to all of the attendees of our PDD, and especially to the members of our Northern Light executive committee members in making our learning day another successful event.   Planning for 2019 is already under way, and stay tuned for announcements on what is coming up next!

New to the Safety Profession Award Winner - Karla Griffin



The Northern Light Chapter would like to congratulate Karla Griffin for winning the New to the Safety Profession Award.  This award recognizes new safety professionals for their professional accomplishments within their chapters.     


Special Projects Award Winner - Dianna Anderson




The Northern Light Chapter would like to congratulate Dianna Anderson for winning a Special Projects Award.  The Special Project Awards are presented for a "one-time" Special Project that advances the profession, provides research and development opportunities, or promotes Health & Safety to the OH&S Community, Employers and/or the community at large.  Presentation of the award took place at the 2018 CSSE Professional Development Conference.

Dianna for Tron Construction & Mining LP as the Corporate Safety Coordinator and has assisted the company to implement a robust and thriving safety management system with a culture of continuous improvement.  Contratulations Dianna!

2018 Saskatchewan CSSE - Training Survey Results Highlights

• 29 respondents to the survey, 
• 79% were interested in taking the courses in the next 3 years.  9 or
• 21% were were not planning on doing training, thus were not required to complete remaining questions.
• 55% of the respondents have done none of the training through CSSE but would be interested.
• 60% are not pursuing a certification, however they would still like to do some of the training available
• Top 3 requested trainings are (in order of weight of “Very important”)
  • Essentials of Risk Management (75%);
  • Applied risk Communication (60%);
  • Developing Effective OHSE Training Courses (55%)
• 90% of respondents were willing to travel between Saskatoon and Regina for the training
• 45% of respondents would prefer to have training on the weekdays and 45% had no preference either way

The North and South Chapter will be use this information to determine a training plan for the next year.

The award is presented to an individual who has made a significant contribution to the field of safety and injury prevention in the province of Saskatchewan. Congratulations to this year's recipient Bob Ocrane. Bob has been a long time member of the Northern Light Chapter and is an active member of the Chapter's Executive and was instrumental in the establishment of the yearly Steps for Life Walk in Saskatoon.
