Topic: Domestic Violence and Your Workplace Program: An OH&S Concern

Every year, several thousand Albertans from all walks of life will be unsafe in workplaces because of violent personal relationships.  In addition to keeping employees safer, the OH&S legislation has changed (as of June 1st, 2018) to include domestic violence as a distinct form of workplace violence to be addressed by employers.  The Alberta Council of Women`s Shelters has developed the Domestic Violence and Your Workplace program in partnership with labour, governments and organizations of all descriptions.  This general awareness training will provide knowledge and tools for safety professionals including: the dynamics of power and control, the signs of domestic violence in victims and perpetrators and how to recognize them in workplace contexts, the legislation and how it relates to employer liability, our recommended response model, key take-aways during disclosures and connections to community supports.

Speaker: Christie Lavan and Astrid Mitchell of Alberta Council of Women’s Shelters

Astrid Mitchell is a Consultant and Facilitator in the Alberta Council of Women’s Shelter’s Leading Change program. She is from Drayton Valley and works as an OH&S Consultant, primarily in the transportation industry. She has a diploma with distinction in Occupational Health and Safety from the University of Alberta Faculty of Extension and is an Alberta Motor Transport Association internal auditor.

Christie Lavan leads ACWS’ primary prevention programming through the provincial call to action called: Leading Change.  She trained with the Military as a Radio Operator in the Communications Reserve, worked as production assistant in media, wrote & produced television & film content in the independent television industry, and served corporate and non-profit organizations as a communications generalist before specializing in prevention of gender-based violence and community development.

We hope to see you there!
