9-Nov-2020 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM - Safety Work vs the Safety of Work

The Edmonton Chapter is pleased to announce two exclusive professional development
workshops for Chapter members with Dr. Drew Rae.

Workshop 1 - Safety Work vs the Safety of Work

This session is an online mini-lecture followed by a discussion and a small-group exercise. Participants will be encouraged to think about what they, as practitioners, spend their time doing, and identifying the
direct and indirect purposes of those activities. Dr. Drew Rae will provide some useful tests for exploring the relationship between the work we do in the name of safety (safety work) and the ultimate goal of that work (the safety of work).

At the end of this session, participants will be able to:
• describe the different purposes of safety activities, including organizational goals not directly related to the safety of work;

• discuss the role of theory and evidence in preferring some safety activities over others;

• critically examine their own work practices, and reflect on the appropriate balance between organizational and safety purposes for those practices.

Speaker Bio

Dr Drew Rae is a Senior Lecturer in the Safety Science Innovation Lab at Griffith University, where he teaches courses on research methods and safety engineering and manages the lab’s research program. Drew’s own research uses a mix of ethnography, field experiments and theory-building to investigate organizational safety practices. He is particularly interested in understanding the myths, rituals and bad habits that surround the work of managers and safety practitioners, and how this work influences front-line operations. Drew co-hosts the Safety of Work podcast and is Associate Editor for the journal Safety Science.
