Reflections on Safety and Health Week

We had an entire week to celebrate our collective success, and what a week it was! We partnered with the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety to kick off Safety and Health Week. Minister of Labour Seamus O’Regan praised the important work of participants as he helped open the week. There were also inspirational stories shared on perseverance, overcoming challenges, and realizing opportunities by numerous speakers.

Threads of Life, which supports families who have experienced occupational fatalities, was also an important part of Safety and Health Week. Every year, they hold Steps for Life across the country. I will walk with my chapter on May 14.

Safety and Health Week also gives CSSE an opportunity to step back and realize the effect our work has on our employers, colleagues, friends, and the community as a whole. During the week, multiple events were well attended by CSSE members both in-person and online, which strengthened our bond as professionals and confirmed that together, we can improve the lives of Canadians. It was heartwarming to see all the messages in the Zoom chat boxes between members as they supported and shared stories with each other.

I closed off the week at CSSE’s second annual Atlantic Virtual Safety and Health Week and was proud to be among such strong and passionate occupational health and safety advocates.

Thank you to all the volunteers for organizing fantastic Safety and Health Week events, and to those that attended.

Building Our Collective Story

Safety and Health Week provided an opportunity to pause and reflect on the last two years.  As we weathered the pandemic storm, we’ve also witnessed a renewed global emphasis on health, safety, and the environment, drawing into the limelight health and safety practitioners and professionals.

As a member of the CSSE, you are part of a Canadian network connected from coast to coast to coast and comprising passionate and dedicated professionals.

We are united at the frontlines of workplaces with one dedicated focus: ensuring our colleagues make it home safe at the end of the workday.

We are looking for stories about the experiences of CSSE members. We hope to capture and share the fullest version of our collective story by building a living archive of the voices of health and safety professionals. We want to hear your stories of joy, celebration, pride, and success in the workplace.

Read more to learn how to submit your story.

Sincerely,

Christl Aggus
