February 2022 - Eastern Ontario Virtual Chapter Meeting

The CSSE Eastern Ontario Chapter would like to invite you to participate in our first Lunch and Learn virtual meeting. This meeting will be from noon – 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 24, 2022, with Kevin Schmidt presenting on Rocks to Dust – Preventing Workplace Silica Exposure.

Speaker Bio
Kevin Schmidt has 16 years of experience in the hazardous materials, industrial hygiene, and the safety consulting industry. Spending the beginning of his career in Calgary, Kevin has been in Ottawa for 6 years and is currently the Operation Manager for the EHS Partnerships Ltd. office in Ottawa. Kevin has a degree in Environmental Sciences from Mount Royal University in Calgary, is a Canadian Registered Safety Professional and an Executive member of the CSSE Eastern ON Chapter. He has a wide range of experience covering multiple Canadian jurisdictions and has consulted in various industrial, commercial, governmental, residential, and institutional facilities across Ontario, Alberta, British Columbia, Quebec, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and California. 

Presentation
This presentation will include an overview of what silica is, it’s history of use, and where it can be found in workplaces, facilities, and homes. The presentation will cover health effects and risks involved with worker exposure to these materials. Additionally, federal and provincial regulations and guidelines will be discussed, as well as what you need to know about reducing exposure and preventing illness at your workplaces and projects.

31 March 2022 - Eastern Ontario Virtual Chapter Meeting

Speaker Bio

Allen Cramm, LL.B, Office of the Employer Adviser

Allen received his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Ottawa French Common Law Section and has been a longstanding member of the Law Society of Ontario.

Allen joined the Office of the Employer Adviser (an agency of the Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development) as a Bilingual Employer Specialist in 1997. Prior to that, Allen was the Workers’ Compensation Specialist for Canada Post Corporation, after having left the practice of civil law for a boutique firm in Ottawa. Allen has represented hundreds of small to medium-sized employers throughout his career with the OEA, in both unionized and nonunionized environments, at the WSIB’s Appeals Services Division and at the Workplace Safety & Insurance Appeals Tribunal (WSIAT). He is also a regular speaker on workplace safety & insurance law issues for several governmental and non-governmental organizations. In 2014, Allen proudly received the “Outstanding Community Health & Safety Leader” award from the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering’s (CSSE) Eastern Ontario Chapter. Allen was also named “Workers’ Compensation Lawyer of the Year in Canada” in 2021 by the International Advisory Experts Group.

Presentation
This presentation will include an outline of the legislative modifications that have changed the handling of mental stress claims, and how mental stress entitlement, both traumatic and chronic, is determined by the WSIB.
