Session Description:

Organizations often set out to change their culture in order to improve workplace safety and health, become an employer of choice, and improve overall employee engagement. The relationship between workplace culture, engagement, and safety are related and thought to be difficult to untangle.

The City of Edmonton believes that employee engagement is the key to workplace safety, and that achieving a high degree of employee engagement is directly related to how the organization and its resources are managed. Aligning the safety and health management system with business processes is imperative to establishing and sustaining safety performance that will allow the workplace to be as safe and healthy as it can be.

To accomplish this, the Workforce Safety and Health Branch at the City of Edmonton launched a safety and health culture transformation project built on the principles of employee engagement designed to ensure everyone knows what’s expected of them, and has the tools, resources, and opportunity to do their best. It’s believed that intentional integration of these principles with business planning and prioritization methods and day to day operations will optimize employee engagement and will transform organizational culture. These organizational practices will manifest in specific employee behaviours that contribute to a culture of safety. As a result, safety is top-of-mind for every employee, they are empowered to make their workplace and healthy, and it is something they deeply care about.
