This two-day, hands-on course is designed to provide health and safety practitioners with the tools and techniques to plan, manage, close and evaluate a project related to the health and safety environment. Based on best practices in project management today, participants will also examine the leadership skills required to link health and safety project management to the operational areas of his or her entire organization.
Participants will work on a “live” project from the health and safety environment and apply PM tools and processes to simulate a complete project life cycle: from initiation to closure. Comparisons will be drawn between participants’ current projects and past case studies.
Teams will be structured so that each team has participants from various work environments. The course is hands-on, with practice simulations, using forms and templates commonly used in the project management field.
The course will be based on the 6th edition of PMI’s Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK®) and Canadian best practices in the safety profession.
The course exam is provided to participants by email within five business days of course completion. Participants have 4 weeks from the release date to complete the exam, along with a Statement of Independent Completion. This statement shows that the participant has read and understood the exam instructions, and is submitting an independently completed exam, with any and all collaboration and outside resources are acknowledged therein. The exam deadline is final. Only documented emergencies will be considered by the CSSE as extenuating circumstances for any written request for extension. Please note that delay in opening the exam after delivery, new or added work requirements, and holidays/vacations are not considered extenuating circumstances.
Successful completion of CHSC courses requires completion of a CHSC Exam with a minimum 75% standard. Exams require several hours of additional time commitment beyond in-class time for the student to demonstrate mastery of the course expectations. Exam follows a case study analysis format.
Robert R. Montgomery, CRSP, CHSC, NCSO, created Mountain Industrial Safety Services Inc. of Calgary Alberta and maintains clientele across Canada & the US. He has had the distinct pleasure of working with many organizations across a wide array of industries over nearly 20 years. His notable contracts have included assistance to an American pipeline maintenance company, the largest Condominium builder in Canada and many other contractors and their trade partners.
As a graduate of the University of Saskatchewan and the National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO) program in Alberta, his consulting practice quickly focused on health & safety related elements. He maintains a Certified Health and Safety Consultant (CHSC) designation through the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering and the CRSP certification through the Board of Canadian Registered Safety Professionals. He has served as a member of the Education committee and most recently as Education Director for the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering (CSSE).
He is engaged as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Fredericton where he has written courses on law and ethics, introductory communication and he currently facilitates ‘Effective Communication’ within their MBA program. In addition, he currently facilitates OHS related courses at the University of Calgary that include ‘Hazard identification and Risk Management’ and ‘Energy based Fire Prevention’. He is passionate about the study of communication and organizational behavior and is currently completing research on ‘Communication within Canadian Occupational Health & Safety’ for the classroom.
Robert is an RCMP veteran and has served as a forensic accountant / loss prevention specialist. He maintains membership in the Calgary Division RCMP Veterans Association and is a past member of the Alberta Transportation Safety Board.
As time allows, he enjoys opportunities to present and speak about OH&S related topics and has provided a key-note address at the Avetta Canadian summit and completed workshops that include the 3P Exchange Symposium in Niagara-on-the-Lake.
Robert is married to Debbie and blessed to have two wonderful grown children - David and Lauren. He enjoys spending time at the cottage and eagerly looks forward to extended periods of ‘lake life’ whenever retirement will allow it.
